This section of Leeds Street was once Milton street. all the streets in the area seem to have been named after playwrights but that is as high class as they got, some like Ben Johnson street where reputed amongst the worst in Liverpool in the 19th century. South of Leeds street has been scared by Semi-detached houses, while the north has some lacklustre buildings which may be student accommodation. Expert for the section nearest Scotland road. The block of land is effectively truncated by the tunnel approaches.
Then
National Library of Scotland Historic map.
You can see some of the street names that have vanished on the old map but to get a flavour of what they were like see
Streets of Liverpool and
Scottie Press. People talk about the area having had a great community others of it being a very hard neighbourhood, some of Liverpool's infamous
court dwellings were in the area.
The one thing that is certain is that the south end of it has been more completely destroyed than any other part of Liverpool. Leeds street is responsible for part of this and the Kingsway tunnel approach for some more but the worst bit is the infestation of semi-detached houses. Semi detached have no place in outside the suburbs, they take up too much land, you can give people bigger houses for the same money if they all terraced and still have people living at a higher density, meaning reducing the need for green belt spread.

Future
According to the
Liverpool Echo, some development is planned and you can see the details at the Councils planning site
here. Here is the ground plan, some of the blocks would be 16 storeys high. It is situated between Gardeners Row and Scotland road.
Though if you go to the council's search page
here and search for roads like Bevington Bush you will see many approved developments in the area which have failed since 2000. This is on the east side of Scotland road to the north of Leeds street, around Grosvenor Street, there is space across Scotland road, north of the LJMU building for more development, perhaps some housing for non-students or some office buildings.
I still think that Leeds street needs a bridge, pedestrians and cyclists need to move freely and a bridge over both Leeds street and Scotland road would do that.
