Shaw Hill Street

Until earlier today I had no idea this place had a name, its name is Shaw Hill Street, Car Park. It is situated Between Manchester Street, Preston Street and Shaw Hill Street. It been a car park for a while and destined to be one for up to 2 years according to this planning application.

Then

Side by side modern and old map from Library of Scotland here.

Union Square Shaw Hill Street, Centre-Town, L.1 - 1868
Manchester Street 1964 from Streets of Liverpool
Just below the HMV TV advert is Gilmore Cinema Club, which showed only porn around the back on Preston Street was the Ministry rehearsal rooms. The building which is now Roots Cafe contained a shop called Game, which sold only games for adults.

Now

The side nearest Old Haymarket used by part of a line of shops, behind the poster covered fencing is a drop down to the level of the car park. I'm not sure when it was knocked down but it was still all there mid 80's though looking very tatty.

This is Manchester Street today or Old Haymarket as it sometimes called you can see that only the buildings bottom left or still there from 1964.

Future

Well, it could be anything the only planning permission for it is for a car park which runs out in January 2019. It is owned by Greater Manchester Property Venture Fund which is part of the Greater Manchester Pension Fund, the body that holds the fund for the pensions of the public employees of Greater Manchester councils.
Well, it is now January 2019 and request for another 2 years as a carpark has been put in. On the bright side it is up for sale and the add says Under Offer. See this ad on MoveHut.

  1. Hi, thank you for gathering so much information about so many places in Liverpool. This is so helpful to understand the dynamics. I own a ground level appartment on Shawn street, and I'm quite afraid this piece of lands welcomes a massive tower, blokcing all light and life where I am, do you have any updates about the plannings for this, or even an idea of what restrictions coould apply, pushing the land to be sold under offer a few years ago please?

    Thanks a million

    1. I don't have any further details. The use of the site will be constrained by the Local Plan https://liverpool.gov.uk/planning-and-building-control/plan-making-in-liverpool/the-liverpool-local-plan-2013-2033/. It still seems to be up for sale. https://www.propertysales.com/Listing/Old-Haymarket-Liverpool-Merseyside-L1-6ER
